Selaelo: a welcome gift

Little pink feet: Selaelo Masehela is two weeks old and a precious gift to his mother, Kgadi, and his brother Phuti.

POLOKWANE – It is a warm Friday afternoon and Selaelo Masehela is fast asleep on his mother’s bed.

He is two weeks old and a precious gift to his mother, Kgadi, and his brother Phuti.

“His dad currently works in Rustenburg,” Kgadi tells Review.

“I realised I was pregnant when I started getting very nauseous. I had very bad morning sickness.”

Kgadi is a technician at Polokwane Smelter and says that apart from the morning sickness she had a relatively easy pregnancy. Selaelo was born a healthy of 3,5kg after eight hours of labour.

She says he is an easy baby and only wakes up when he is hungry or wet.

“I knew it was a boy from the first scan. Although Phuti, who is eight years old, was the only child for a long time, he is excited. Unfortunately he is a bit jealous and sometimes pretends he is a baby again. I took him with to the sonar and later on he accepted the new baby.”

Kgadi says she is lucky to have five months’ pregnancy leave and then another four months’ additional leave during which she only works eight hours a day and not her usual 12 hours. “I also have a full time nanny to help me. My mom also lives in Polokwane, but she travels a lot. She says Selaelo is named after her mother.

Phuti says he is glad he has a brother and not a sister. “Now, when he is big, I can kick a ball with him.”

Selaelo is indeed an easy baby, and when Kgadi picks him up for a photo to be taken, he barely makes a squeak or opens his eyes.

“He is a precious gift,” Kgadi says while looking lovingly at Selaelo.
