Edu department dropped province’s stars

The department of education did not arrange for transport, accommodation and attire for the 115 primary school athletes who were to represent the province at the South African primary schools’ championships at the Herman Immelman stadium.

POLOKWANE – The department of education did not arrange for transport, accommodation and attire for the 115 primary school athletes who were to represent the province at the South African primary schools’ championships at the Herman Immelman stadium on Thursday.

Some children got up as early as 03:00 Thursday morning to be in time, as the buses would have departed at 07:00. They came from as far as Sekhukhuneland, Thohoyandou, Musina, Phalaborwa, all over the province.

The buses were to pick up more learners en route, who were waiting along the N1 at Makhado, Mookhopong and Bela Bela.

But the busses were not booked. Emergency measures taken saw the tired and despondent children leaving at 13:30 Thursday afternoon only.

No food nor something to drink were supplied to the children or their teachers and coaches while they were waiting at the department of education’s provincial offices.

Angry parents told Review they did not think their children would be going next year, if chosen for the team.
