SONA: what to fix first?

Review asked locals what they thought was the bigger of two problems in the country: power outages or a lacking education system.

POLOKWANE – President Jacob Zuma will tonight (Thursday) deliver the State of the Nation Address (SONA) to parliament.

Review asked locals what they thought was the bigger of two problems in the country: power outages or a lacking education system.

While the majority of people asked listed power outages and subsequent load shedding as top priority, many felt education needed attention.

Hilda Matlebjane felt the electricity supply should be fixed first. “Where I live we have a lot of problems with electricity. The other municipal services are fine,” she said.

Cathrine Thamaga.

Cathrine Thamaga agreed. “I understand load shedding has to happen, but now we have unscheduled power cuts. Education is not as big a problem.”

Craig Chigumira.

Craig Chigumira felt crime should be the top priority, “that, and a lack of loyalty in parliament. If president Jacob Zuma pays attention to those things, this country will be a better place.”

Terence le Roux.

Terence le Roux felt every aspect of life in South Africa showed problems at this stage.

Desi Earle.

Desi Earle said education should be prioritised first and foremost.

“If people are educated, they can move forward,” she explained.

Ronel Engelbrecht regarded problems in the education system and load shedding as equal in terms of being problematic. “Both are very problematic and something should be done.”

Shannon Williams.
Wayne Mitton.

Shannon Williams agreed, while Wayne Mitton felt electricity shortages was the biggest problem.

“Education is a problem in some areas, but issues with electricity top that.”

Retha Patterson.

The root of the electricity problem, according to Retha Patterson, was that education in South Africa was not up to standard. “If people are educated, they would know how to fix other problems,” she said.
