Biker dies in a head-on collision

MEMBERS of the Eagles Bikers Club joined the family of Matimba “Powerless” Mabaso in mourning his death.

The 30-year-old Mabaso died on Saturday afternoon.

He was travelling from Hoedspruit to Phalaborwa when his motorcycle collided head-on with another vehicle, a sedan, between 15:30 and 16:00 on Mica Road (R 40).

According to an eye witness, Emmanuel Sefole, who was driving in a vehicle behind Mabaso, the sedan was overtaking another vehicle on the road when it collided with Mabaso. He died at the scene of the accident.

There were five passengers in the vehicle that collided with Mabaso, three men, a woman and child, Sefole said.

He added that no one from the other vehicle had serious injuries, but they all were taken to hospital for medical attention.

Mabaso was an operator at a mine in Phalaborwa.

His funeral will be at 08:00 in Bernfarm village outside Phalaborwa on Sunday.

Bikers from Soweto, Limpopo and members of the Midrand Eagles Bikers Club said they planned ride to Phalaborwa on Sunday to honour Mabaso.

Limpopo Eagles Bikers Club organiser, Eric Harmse, said Mabaso was the breadwinner and the eldest of two children.

“He was an amazing guy, always jolly. He went out of his way to make a person smile.

“We are going to miss him very much, especially his dancing,” he said.

Mabaso leaves behind his parents, sister, wife and child.

Kagiso Mootane, spokesperson for the department of transport confirmed that a sedan collided head-on with a motorcycle on the R40 between Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa while overtaking another vehicle.

“A case of capable homicide is being investigated by the police. No arrests have been made yet,” Mootane said.
