Edu dept finds spaces for some unplaced learners

The children who could not be placed at schools in the city at the beginning of the school year were able to attend classes for the first time this week.

POLOKWANE – The children who could not be placed at schools in the city at the beginning of the school year were able to attend classes for the first time this week.

Review reported last week that several parents were up-in-arms after their children had still not been accommodated at schools in the city. As a result, these parents formed the Polokwane Schools Placement Committee led by Lerato Molefe.

“We managed to ensure that the department of education fulfilled its constitutional obligation of ensuring that our kids are in classes and learning,” Molefe said.

Molefe explained that the committee could only speak for their own children and not for the rest of the 3 000 children who did not find places in schools in Polokwane last week.

She said the committee successfully managed to bring several issues to the attention of the department.

“We would like to thank all the people who were with us on this journey including the media and the public who sympathised and gave us messages of support during this difficult time,” she said.

Polokwane spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo this week confirmed that a stand in Outspan Drive, Bendor had been earmarked for a new school.

Review contacted the department of education to find out whether the rest of the unplaced learners found places in schools and when the promised schools would be built.

By the time of going to print, education spokesperson, Paena Galane, could not comment on the matter.
