Dark road puts motorists in danger

Motorists fear a serious accident in Landdros Maré Street on the way to Louis Trichardt.

POLOKWANE – Motorists fear a serious accident in Landdros Maré Street on the way to Louis Trichardt.

“At night this road is very dark, because there are no street lights, especially from the corner of Landdros Maré and Veldspaat Street continuing past Soetdorings. There are no visible white lines or road markings on the road and, because the road is so dark, it causes confusion. I think this road is a death certificate for all who use it,” a motorist said.

Another motorist suggested that the municipality painted white lines on the road so that motorists could clearly see which side of the road they should drive.

“This will help a lot because at night the motorists are careless and reckless. Some drive in the middle of the road, but with a visible white line they will be forced to drive on their side of the road. There are trucks also travelling on this road, so if there are no visible road markings, or light in the area it could cause a serious and tragic accident,” the motorist said.

Malesela Maubane, a municipal spokesperson, said the municipality had embarked on a road marking programme since December last year, but it was interrupted by heavy rains.

“We will, however, resume with the programme next week as our teams are currently finalising critical areas to be marked. The lines are not completely faded and motorists are urged to stick to speed limits and keep safe following distances while the municipality is addressing the matter on road markings around Landdros Maré and Veldspaat Street,” Maubane said.

The municipality urged residents to report roads and storm water issues to the municipality at (015) 290 2372/2000/2457/2458.
