‘Holes the size of craters’

POLOKWANE – Several motorists are angry that the Polokwane Municipality has left the city’s roads to deteriorate to such an extent that some of them are practically inaccessible.

“Potholes in roads in and around the city have been left to get bigger and bigger, and no one will pay for the damages we have suffered because of tyres lost,” Jaco van Zyl, a Polokwane motorist said.

Residents of Dalmada said they had filled the potholes with sand in an attempt to improve the road, but this did not last very long.

SPCA manager in Polokwane, Anton de Bruyn, said the condition of the road leading to the SPCA in the Roodepoort area was so poor that people did not want to drive there to find and or adopt animals as they did not want to damage their vehicles.

Municipal spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said according to them, the Roodepoort road was the responsibility of the department of roads.

“However, the municipality will escalate the matter to the relevant cost centre in the department of transport, who will then look into the complaint,” he said.

“The municipality has in-house routine maintenance schedules deployed regularly to fix potholes and other damage to the roads.

There are also routine maintenance contractors schedules executed in cases of heavy road damages. The municipality is working around the clock to ensure the roads are up to standard,” Mothapo said.

Residents can assist the municipality by reporting road-related issues to the municipality using the following numbers: (015) 290 2372/3/4 or (015) 290 2095.
