Still some spaces available at tertiary institutions in city

POLOKWANE – Latecomers who wish to register to study further after gr. 12 may still find limited space at tertiary institutions, but for certain courses only.

This emerged after a quick survey done by Review among some tertiary institutions in the city.

Capricorn FET College, with campuses in Polokwane, Seshego, Senwabarwana and Ramakgopa satellite campus, still had some space for students wishing to study engineering and business studies, according to public relation officer, Justice Lebopa. He said students had only until Friday to register. The college already opened last week.

Students wishing to register could do so at the campuses, but only for the engineering and business studies courses. They would be required to bring a certified copy of their results and their ID, Lebopa said.

Boston College is still open for registration until the end of January, also only for specific courses such as business communication services, health, sports and wellness, hospitality and leisure, IT, accounting, management and marketing, human resources and paralegal studies.

The college offers diplomas, certificates as well as graduate courses and short learning courses from six months to a year.

Marketing officer Melaney Beneke said the college also offered a matric equivalency certificate accepted by local universities.

Students could apply for admission online at www.boston.co.za or at the college itself, she said.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Polokwane last year warned that the closing date for all applications for 2015 admissions had been changed from August 15 2014 to July 31 2014.

No walk-in applications would be accepted at the TUT for 2015 admissions. Online applications opened on January 12 for some courses not yet full, but space was very limited.

According to Willa de Ruyter, TUT media communicator, the system would only accept students based on admission requirements until space was no longer available.

She was unable to confirm which courses could still admit students, as personnel were still working on the online admission requests received.

Application forms are available from the TUT contact centre at 086 110 2421 or send an e-mail general@tut.ac.za. Alternatively, an application form can be downloaded from TUT’s website at www.tut.ac.za.

At the University of Limpopo (UL) this week, a stampede nearly occurred when thousands of students frantically tried to get admission at the 11th hour, however, only 5 000 students could be admitted and preference was given to those who had applied in time.

According to UL’s website, first time enrolments ended on Friday.

A faculty letter of acceptance was needed to register, as well as proof of payment of registration fees or bursary proof of payment.

To qualify for admission students needed to be in possession of a matriculation certificate endorsed with a Bachelor’s Degree and prospective students should make sure all their documents were certified.

Their original gr. 12 results and ID documents were required.
