A North West farmer was electrocuted by an electric insect catcher at the weekend, Beeld reported on Tuesday.

Willie Lubbe, 32, was having a braai at the family’s farm near Makwassie with his wife Hanneke, his mother Helena, his two children and other relatives on Saturday night, when he reportedly fell. A large insect catcher was hanging from a canopy near the braai.

“Wille stepped backwards. I am not sure if he lost his balance, but he grabbed at the insect catcher. He could not let go,” Helena Lubbe said.

“Hanneke tried to pull him away, but she had to leave him because the current shocked her as well.”

The family could not resuscitate him. He was declared dead in Wolmaransstad.
