Mokopane sporting highlights for 2014

IT was a busy year for Mokopane’s sports achievers who competed on national and international level with great success.

Here are a few of the highlights of 2014:

January

The athletic season kicked off on a high note with tough competition between the sports stars of various schools and their rivals.

February

Potgietersrus Old Boys Cricket Club won two leagues for 2014.

The Potties swim team showed their mettle when they finished in 12th place from 608 teams at the Midmar Myl in KwaZulu-Natal.

March

Hoƫrskool Piet Potgieter was crowned as winners of the inter high school athletics meet in Groblersdal.

Marnus Uys, a learner of Hoƫrskool Piet Potgieter was named athlete of the day and awarded as the best track athlete of the day.

A R100 000 injection into the rugby department of Hoƫrskool Piet Potgieter was greatly appreciated by everyone.

The avid rugby and netball players of Laerskool Krugerpark made their mark on the field

April

The 14 year-old Monique Venter a learner from HPP received her South African colours in wrestling.

The Mauritz Hansen Rugby week kicked off on the fields of Hoƫrskool Hans Strijdom with 68 rugby teams who competed in this tournament.

Learners hit the pedals in the school cycling series that took place for the first time in Limpopo.

MornƩ van der Bank, a 15-year-old learner from Tuks Mokopane Swimming Club, received junior South African colours for swimming.

May

MornƩ van der bank won a silver medal at the Africa Swim National competition in Kampala.

The senior swimmers from Tuks Mokopane Swim Club took part in a obstacle gala at Redstone Country Lodge near Hartbeespoort.

June

Three athletes from Folang Mokerong Athletic Club were given the opportunity to observe and assist Comrades Marathon runners on the route.

Four of the five A-rugby teams of Hoƫrskool Hans Strijdom played in the semi final and final Beeld Trophy rugby matches.

July

Horse riders showed their mettle at Fauresmith 200.

A grand total of 3 150 sport learners from all over the country took part in the AVS Bokkieweek in Mookgophong.

Zelda Genis, an air gun shooter from the CVO-Luggeweerskietklub took part in the British junior international air-gun championships.

Four students of the Ten Potgietersrus trampoline club were awarded with three gold and four silver medals after competing in a inter-provincial competition.

August

Three dancers of Z’s Dance Studio in Mokopane took part in the American Dance Awards in Boston were they competed against 62 other dancers from all over the world.

Potties rugby team is crowned as champions of the Waterberg league for the first time in 14 years.

The under 16 Hockey team of HPP won the Noordvaal hockey championships.

Hoƫrskool Piet Potgieter hosted their Tour de Pot for a second year with great success.

September

Awie Hattingh a resident of Mokopane won the Ironman 5150 triathlon competition for the third year in a row.

The students of Tuks Mokopane Swim Club participated in the ice-bucket challenge to support the cause of MNS disease.

October

Mokopane swimmer Tersia Smith qualified for the World Organ Transplant Games that will take place next year in Argentina.

The EH Hassim tennis-tournament held by the Potgietersrus Tennis Club was a great success and enjoyed by all participants.

Hoƫrskool Piet Potgieter won the inter high school swim trophy for the seventh year consecutively.

Soccer players showed their skills at the annual Mogalakwena Football for Hope Centre, hosted by the Mogalakwena Municipality

November

Sportman Amateur Posduifklub (SAP) awarded their champions.

Laerskool Krugerpark were the winners of the top 10 gala for the first time in four years.

December

The Kameeldoring Squash club crowned their winners.

The 1 200 km anti-drug cycle tour finished on November 27 and was lauded a success.

Lukie Steenkamp has been awarded as the Potgietersrus Duiweklub champion.
