As we say farewell to Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, we also celebrate the life of a great South African, a great statesman, a great human being.

Nelson Mandela embodied more than any person in our recent history the ideals that the Red Cross stands for, ideals of humanity and selfl ess service to others.

Madiba’s unparalleled sacrifices for the well-being of his fellow South Africans, his immense contribution to the public life of his country and his tireless work for children are known to all. But we also salute his humble concern for every person who crossed his path. Again and again those who knew Madiba tell how he really saw and heard and was truly interested in everyone that he met, no matter whether they were presidents or shack dwellers, rich or poor, captains of industry or workers.

Madiba, your example has inspired all of us in the South African Red Cross Society, and will continue to inspire us long into the future.

It is our fervent hope that we may, to the very best of our ability, live up to the ideals you have shown us of service to the poor and vulnerable members of society.

Rest in peace, Madiba.

Condolences from the Mogalakwena mayor, Tlhalefi Mashamaite This weekend, the centre of attention will be in Qunu in the Eastern Cape, where a world icon, Dr Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela will be laid to rest after he passed on peacefully in the company of his family at the age of 95, on December 5.

We have lost our father, an icon of note, the fi rst black democratic president of the country. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss. He has sacrificed much and endured much so that we could be free. His tireless struggle for freedom earned him the respect of the world. Let’s unite and accomplish his dreams.

Tata Mandela used to say, “I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons will live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and achieve.

But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die for. I therefore place the remaining years of my life in your hands.”
