Traffic officials ignore laws

Provincial traffic department officials did not set a very good example to motorists in the city when they parked in a no parking zone.

POLOKWANE – Provincial traffic department officials did not set a very good example to motorists in the city when they parked in a no parking zone.

While they were parked there, they chatted with a colleague and went to buy takeaways, while they were still parked on the yellow line; effectively hampering the smooth flow of lunchtime traffic in Hans van Rensburg Street on Friday afternoon.

Residents complained to Review about this incident and said it was unacceptable to them that the very people responsible for road safety, were the ones who broke the law.

“How can they expect us to obey the law when it is clear that they themselves disregard it,” one resident questioned.

While the vehicle involved belonged to the provincial traffic department, the municipal traffic department will also look into the matter. Municipal spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said steps would be taken against any traffic official found to disobey the laws they were sworn to keep and protect.

Traffic, security and liaison spokesperson, Lediga Masenya said such incidents could be reported to (015) 295 1000, with as much detail as possible including the vehicle registration number, where and when the incident occurred. He said it was unacceptable that any provincial traffic official failed to comply with the traffic rules and the matter would be investigated.
