MOKOPANE – “THERE will be zero tolerance of any traffic violations on all our roads as we are about to enter into the festive season,” said Mafenya Lediga, spokesperson for the department of transport, safety, security and liaison.

Seventeen people have died on Limpopo roads between November 3 and 9. Three of these casualties were pedestrians, 10 passengers and four drivers. The main causes were allegedly driver fatigue, speeding, drunken driving and pedestrian jaywalking.

The department of transport under the leadership of the MEC, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana will implement a focused and intensified campaign to curtail road accidents this festive season. The campaign will be focused on an intensive law enforcement plan that will mobilise over 1 000 traffic officers and road safety officials.

From December 1, 2013 to January 7, 2014 we had about 1 300 fatal accident on our roads, said Graeme Scala, Automobile Association of South-Africa (AA) in his interview with eNCA on January 9.

There have already been numerous accidents in and around the Mokopane region.
