Outlets at RDP houses remain problematic

MOKOPANE – WHEN it rains in Mokopane hundreds of houses in the RDP extensions are flooded. This situation with the storm water system outlets has been a problem for many years, said councillor Thapelo Mokwele, DA PR councillor.

The DA has been bringing this to the attention of David Malepa, manager techical services at Mogalakwena Local Municipality for the last three years.

“We came up with a temporary solution to prevent the flooding from happening by creating a gravel wall to redirect the water to pass the houses already in 2011. The technical services commits to implementing the solution but does a half a job and do not create the wall all the way through.”

The DA has now given the municipality an ultimatum to finalise this wall barrier before the first big rains falls. If one of the RDP houses is flooded due to their failure to execute their responsibility to prevent it, the DA will be laying a charge with the Human Rights Commission.

Malepa confirmed they are installing the concrete pipes and that the necessary steps are being taken to solve this problem.
