THE police and various community leaders held a meeting on security in Mahwelereng recently, where they talked about safety measures during the festive season.

Andy Goetsch, president of the Community Police Forum, asked the community to assist the police in crime prevention as it usually increased during the holiday season.

“It will be necessary that we should all be observant of our surroundings. Take note when your neighbours are away on holiday and if you see any suspicious people or activity in their yard, inform the police as soon as possible.”

Note if there are strange vehicles driving around in the area at night or pedestrians loitering around. Do not leave objects in locked vehicles in town, it encourages theft out of motor vehicles. When you lock your vehicle with a remote, do not walk away without first checking that it is locked. Remote control code breakers are still prevalent in town.

Do not give unknown people temporary work in your garden or home. Many illegal immigrants that do not have work are looking for temporary work and they may just be looking for an opportunity to break in. If you employ first make a copy of their ID and ensure you have all their details.

Take note if you see people with copper pipes, wire or batteries, as many drug addicts are stealing copper products to sell in order to maintain their addiction.

Beware of car guards who are not affiliated to the SAPS as they may be looking for an opportunity to break in your vehicle. All the SAPS affiliated car guards are wearing yellow safety vests. Check all your alarm systems and security gates before leaving on holiday, Goetsch concluded.
