Bikers take stand against drugs in city

A biker club in the city has decided to join hands with all interested parties and take a stand against drugs after witnessing a drug deal.

POLOKWANE – A biker club in the city has decided to join hands with all interested parties and take a stand against drugs.

This decision was made after one of the members of the Red Devils biker club witnessed a drug deal.

Red Devils president, Jeff de Beer, said they were still at the start of this new venture and called on all interested parties to become involved.

“After we posted our intentions on Facebook, the response was overwhelming.

“I could not believe the amazing response we received from other biker clubs, churches, and even a rehabilitation centre,” he said.

“The project will be called Dad, which stands for Devils Against Drugs.

“We will try to raise awareness of the huge influence drugs have on the community as well as how this problem can be stopped.

“We feel that drugs have been a part of our society for far too long and the time has come for people to stand up and say no the drugs that kill our people,” De Beer said

Project plans:

• Get a team of interested people together to assist the club and to drive the project;

• Involve the police to establish effective reporting structures and contact details;

• Involve someone from a drug rehabilitation centre;

• Involve motivational speakers to give talks to different audiences and schools concerning the dangers of drugs;

• Get the community, churches and schools involved.

• Assist with the rehabilitation of addicts and families affected by substance abuse;

• Involve people who will be able to teach others more about the symptoms and warning signals of drug abuse;

• Involve rehabilitated addicts to help active drug abusers;

• Get the biker community to assist with the rehabilitation of addicts, and

• ultimately create a drug-free city.

A brainstorming meeting was held last Tuesday with interested parties including the Meteffect Recovery Centre.

A second open meeting will be held at the Red Devils’ club on Tuesday November 4. The club is situated at 70 Vermikuliet Street.

Anyone who wishes to become involved in the project is invited to attend this meeting.
