2 accused of R500 000 robbery

TWO men who were allegedly found in possession of suspected stolen cigarettes valued at over R500 000 appeared before the Naphuno magistrate's court

TWO men who were allegedly found in possession of suspected stolen cigarettes valued at over R500 000 appeared before the Naphuno magistrate’s court last Wednesday.

Eric Makwala (38) and Cliff Ngwenya (34) were remanded in police custody when they appeared before court in connection with armed robbery and the possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Their case was postponed to November 3 for a formal bail application.

Provincial police spokesperson, Col Ronél Otto said the two suspects were arrested after a cigarette delivery vehicle was robbed twice in one week in Burgersdorp village in the Mopani area.

“The police followed up information and with the assistance of a security company, the two suspects were arrested. Cigarettes to the value of more than R500 000 were recovered and an unlicensed firearm confiscated,” said Otto.

Otto said further investigations revealed that Ngwenya was already on bail for a similar offence committed in Seshego earlier this year. Police investigations continue.
