Kids win with police

The Seshego police and Sonke Gender Justice Network officially crowned the winners of their essay and radio debate competition at the Moletjie Tribal Hall

POLOKWANE – The Seshego police and Sonke Gender Justice Network officially crowned the winners of their essay and radio debate competition at the Moletjie Tribal Hall on Thursday.

Learners from 16 schools participated in the competition.

During the competition, learners were requested to write an essay with the topic “what more can government do to eradicate gender-based violence effectively”.

A debating contest was held under the same topic.

According to Seshego police spokesperson, WO Mothemane Malefo, participants of the competition were divided into two groups.

“We wanted to balance the competition, which is why we decided that 22 learners would compete in the essay competition, while 12 learners would participate in a radio debate.

“We host the competition annually to educate young children in the communities we serve. The competition also aims to nurture writing and public speaking talent,” Malefo said.

He said with the competition, they wanted to give learners the opportunity to come up with solutions to the problem of gender-based violence.

“We wanted learners to address this issue. We believe that these types of competitions will teach learners something about gender-based violence.

“We always come up with a new topic every year,” he said.
