THE Hawks in Limpopo on Monday arrested a college owner who had evaded arrest since March last year after he allegedly ran a bogus college in Tzaneen, known as the St Ignatius FET College.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said the 30-year-old suspect, Sungunai Kangausaru who was also known as Mike Twala, was arrested in Mpumalanga following a sting operation with the cooperation of the Hawks and officials from the department of home affairs.

He said the suspect, who had vanished more than a year ago, had allegedly run the so-called college without the correct documentation.

“During his arrest on Monday, he was allegedly found with a substantial amount of money and the police also confiscated his vehicle.

“The suspect faces a charge of fraud involving more than R1,1 million. He will also face a charge of identity fraud since he allegedly used a fraudulent South African identity document.

“A charge of contravening the Immigration Act has also been added.”

The fact that the college was not up to standards came to light when investigations were initiated after students who registered with the college went to the department of education to enquire whether the college was registered.

“At the time two accomplices, a manager and a supposed lecturer, were arrested and have since been charged and released under the Immigration Act after it was found that they were not connected with the running of the college,” he said.

Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Maj Genl Dibero Molatjana, praised the tenacity of the investigators. “We have always maintained that criminals can run but they can never hide,” she said.

Kangausaru appeared before the Tzaneen magistrate’s court on Monday.

The case was postponed to Thursday, October 23 and he remains in police custody.
