Car catches fire in illegal drag race

THE department of transport, safety and liaison has issued a stern warning to motorists who take part in illegal drag racing on public roads.

THE department of transport, safety and liaison has issued a stern warning to motorists who take part in illegal drag racing on public roads.

This comes after an illegal drag race on Chris Hani Drive in Seshego zone 1 almost ended in tragedy on Sunday when one of the cars that drifted and spun caught fire while in action, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Departmental spokesperson, Mafenya Lediga, said the department was worried about people using public roads for illegal races that endangered the lives of other road users.

Seshego police spokesperson WO Mothemane Malefo called on the community and motorists to report any illegal drag racing and spinning on public roads.

“We were not aware of this problem and we will make sure police officials are always visible in this area because it is our job to prevent such incidents. If it happens again, an arrest will be made,” said Malefo.

A taxi driver who did not wish to be named for fear of victimisation told Express that drag races along Chris Hani Drive has been a problem for a long time and no one seemed to care.

“It is a problem for motorists because we are forced to stop while they spin their cars. In fact, I am happy that one of their cars caught fire, maybe they will now learn that what they are doing is wrong.”

No injuries were reported in the fire.
