Businessman dies in hail of bullets

Bhavin Desai (40), an executive from Desai Cash and Carry, died in a hail of bullets as he prevented would-be robbers from entering his store's premises

A well-known businessman died in a hail of bullets as he prevented would-be robbers from entering his store’s premises on Sunday evening.

According to the police report, Bhavin Desai (40), an executive from Desai Cash and Carry, was driving along the the N1 north towards Makhado when he noticed a suspicious vehicle following him.

Keeping an eye on the vehicle, he quickly made his way to his business premises, where, on arrival, the security officers at the premises did not open the gate for him immediately. The suspicious vehicle caught up with Desai and the occupants opened fire on his vehicle before speeding away again.

Desai was hit by at least one bullet and although he was taken to hospital quickly, he was declared dead on arrival.

According to Makhado police spokesperson, Const Tshifhiwa Radzlinae, a case of murder was being investigated.

“No arrests have been made as yet, but our investigation continues,” she said.

Desai’s uncle, Anil, said they would remember him as someone who always protected others. “We think he prevented the shooters from entering the premises and that is why they put seven bullets in his car.

“He was still alive when we took him to the hospital, but died when we arrived there,” his uncle said.

Desai’s funeral took place in Makhado on Tuesday. “We will miss him, as will his wife and children,” Anil concluded.
