“I saw this guy hit my cousin with a glass and then he shot him. I was so shocked, I have never seen anybody being shot point blank, just like that.”

Sapa Yopa deputy president, Johz Mamabolo was an eyewitness to the shooting of his cousin, Boy Mamabolo, chairperson of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) Milo Malatji branch, during a Metro FM Polokwane Literary Fair event held at Waterland on Sunday night. The shooter, who is well-known to the Mamabolo’s, also shot and injured three bystanders.

Mamabolo is currently in a critical but stable condition at Mediclinic Limpopo. ANCYL provincial spokesperson, Onnica Moloi, held vigil at the hospital most of the night, and Boy was operated on at around 03:00 yesterday (Monday) morning.

Moloi confirmed that three other people were wounded in the shooting. She said two people had received treatment and been discharged, while the third person was still in hospital. She did not wish to comment further on the actual shooting, saying this would form a part of the police’s investigation.

According to Johz, the two people who had already been discharged were Leonard and Alvin Sanderson, members of Sapa Yopa. Leonard told Review that he had not seen who shot him, or what had happened at the time, all he knew was that he and his nephew had been shot.

By the time of going to print no arrest had been made as yet, according to Limpopo police spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi. He said the police expected the suspect to hand himself over soon. He would then appear before court within the next 48 hours, Mulaudzi explained. He added that the police were looking for Jacob Lebogo in connection with the shooting.

Even though neither the police or the ANCYL want to name the shooter on record, it is no secret who he is. Lebogo and Mamabolo were childhood friends and bosom buddies until politics made them go their separate ways. Lebogo is also said to be a good friend of Julius Malema. At the time that Lebogo and Mamabolo discontinued their friendship, Leboga was the ANCYL provincial secretary, while Mamabolo was chairperson of the Geographical Names Council in the province. When Malema left the ANCYL and started the EFF, Lebogo also left the ANCYL, but never publicly supported the EFF. Since then, Lebogo and Mamabolo have had several public disagreements, with their arguments becoming very personal.

According to information, the last such argument took place between the two men at a nightclub on Friday night, and seemingly continued on Sunday night at Waterland. Manager of Waterland, Jeff Sibanda, said he did not know how the shooter managed to get past security with a firearm. “I am very shocked. People fight everywhere but not with guns. “Our security will have to be improved,” he told Review.
