ABOUT 92 rhinos have been killed and four injured in Limpopo since the beginning of the year.

This was revealed during an awareness campaign of the fight against rhino poachers and drug smuggling at Marakele National Park in the Waterberg Biodome.

The campaign was run by the department of transport, security and liaison.

Head of the Hawks in Limpopo, Maj Genl Dibero Molatjana, said some of the challenges in the fight against rhino poaching included carcasses that decompose before all the evidence could be recovered and evidence that are tampered with.

Transport, security and liaison MEC, Mapula Mokaba-Phukwana encouraged residents to consider game as community property and to protect it.

“We need to protect animals not only for ourselves but also for future generations,” she said.

Department head, Nchabeng Tsebe, said the department saw it fit to bring an anti-rhino poaching awareness campaign to the community in September, Tourism Month.

“Tourism safety is our mandate.

“Poaching impacts negatively on tourism, an industry that employs many people and attracts visitors to our beautiful province.”

Tsebe further said people should report any suspicious activities regarding rhino poaching and that people should question those who brought game meat home, as many hunted illegally at game reserves.
