Friends and family gathering around a fire for a braai is a South African tradition that has become a part of Heritage Day celebrations across the country.

All sorts of meat, bread, potatoes, mielies, mushrooms and an assortment of vegetables in tinfoil can be cooked on the fire while enjoying the company of loved ones around the braai.

National Braai Day will take place tomorrow (Wednesday) and South Africans are encouraged to light a fire and cook their food on the grill.

Review spoke to some Polokwane residents about their favourite food to braai.

Andia and Buks van Staden enjoy braaiing sausage and steak with their own homemade spices. “It is a social activity for our family,” explains Andia.

Nikki Wolfaardt says that her family enjoys braaiing “bloubul steak” and boerewors. “It has to be served with pap and sauce of course,” she adds.

Nkosinathi Ngoveni says she really enjoys pork and beef on the braai. “It is a fun thing to do with family and friends and I enjoy it,” she says.

Wesley Williams says chicken and mutton chops on the grill are his favourite. “We always have an assortment of salads like tossed green salad and potato salad to compliment the braai,” he adds.
