Lebogo granted bail of R5 000; set to appear in court on Nov 14

Jacob Lebogo was granted bail of R5 000 in the Polokwane magistrate's court on Thursday.

Jacob Lebogo was granted bail of R5 000 in the Polokwane magistrate’s court on Thursday.

Lebogo has to answer to cases of attempted murder and the discharging of a firearm in a public place, after an incident last Sunday when the chairperson of the ANCYL’s Milo Malatji branch, Boy Mamabolo and three others were wounded in a shooting incident at Waterland.

Mamabolo was seriously injured, but the others were discharged after being treated.

One of the other three wounded persons, Alvin Sanderson, still has a bullet lodged in his upper leg, as the public hospital can only schedule an operation after six weeks to dislodge it.

Lebogo’s initial bail application was postponed last Tuesday as the state’s public prosecutor Jacky Mabasa was not yet ready to say if the state would oppose the bail or not based on the evidence they had to their avail. Lebogo handed himself over to the police early Tuesday morning.

Lebogo handed in the firearm, which can discharge 15 shots, on Tuesday.

It contained 13 bullets.

The court heard that he did not have pending cases or previous convictions and was not believed to be a flight risk. The state proposed bail of R20 000, but this was eventually reduced to R5 000.

The investigating officer in the case is WO Malesela Ledwaba. Ledwaba indicated that Lebogo intended to plead not guilty, and was due to appear before court again on November 14.
