Group spearheads a clean-up campaign

MMOTONG Environmental Care Takers embarked on a clean-up campaign in ward 16 of the Tlou Teffu Moletjie cluster on Tuesday.

Chriseldah Mathebe of the Mmotong Environmental Care Takers said they believed they were responsible for cleaning 16 villages in Ward 16.

“All we want is to keep our environment clean.”

“People dump things such as diapers in the street and we want to teach them that it is not environmentally friendly. Illegal dumping is a major problem in our communities,” she said.

Mathebe said they started the initiative in May.

“We clean up once a month, but our plan is to move on to work on a weekly basis. We noticed that people are eager to work for their communities even though they don’t get anything in return,” she said.

She said they faced challenges such as a lack of equipment like gloves and dust masks.

“We are happy that people came out to help clean ward 16. It shows that people are concerned about the environment. We want private companies and the municipality to help us with resources or funding. We want to see this project succeed.”

Alpheus Maja, one of the people who was part of the clean-up campaign, said it the campaign was good for the environment.

“I hope this project will run for a long time to help keep our communities clean. We want our children to leave in healthy conditions.”
