TWO University of Venda (Univen) students were recently awarded bursaries valued at R40 000 each by the Professional Provident Society (PPS).

Phathutshedzo Masindi, a fourth year nursing science student, and Muvhuso Mutamba, a fourth year law student, were overjoyed to receive this news.

According to Univen’s head of the department of advanced nursing sciences, Lizzy Netshikweta, most of the students came from families whose parents could not afford to pay the tuition fees.

She said the PPS bursary funds would help to change the lives of these two students for the better.

“Law and nursing courses are often not funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and students are forced to drop out.

PPS manager of distribution, Jaycee Vorster, said the company decided to invest in the future of promising students whose parents could not afford their university fees.

“To be eligible for our company’s bursary funds, a student should be in their fourth year of study and have obtained a 60% or higher average in the previous academic year. We fund nursing, law or agriculture students,” Voster said.

Masindi said she thought her dream of completing her degree in four years was shattered when she could not get a bursary from the NSFAS.

“I am thankful to PPS for the bursary, because my parents cannot afford to pay my tuition fees for the university.

“Now I promise to work hard and complete my studies,” Masindi said to CV.
