The minister for home affairs, Malusi Gigaba spent his 67 Minutes for Mandela in different parts of the province on Friday.

POLOKWANE – The minister for home affairs, Malusi Gigaba spent his 67 Minutes for Mandela in different parts of the province on Friday.

Gigaba’s day started in the city at the Polokwane taxi rank, where he was accompanied by the premier, Stanley Mathabatha.

There they cut a cake in celebration of the day, which was handed out to commuters.

Thereafter, he travelled to Mankweng where he joined a clean-up campaign at Mothapo Primary School.

Gigaba painted some of the classrooms and outside walls of the school building. He also helped to pick up litter on the premises.

After helping out at the school, he went to the Mankweng Provincial Hospital, where he handed out unabridged birth certificates to mothers of new born babies.

Gigaba encouraged parents, especially mothers, to register their children after giving birth.

“There are home affairs officials at the hospital to help mothers register their babies so that when they leave the hospital they have unabridged birth certificates. If for cultural reasons a mother cannot register her baby immediately after birth, she can do so within 30 days,” he said.

Gigaba also led an imbizo outreach programme, aimed at evaluating the public’s experience on home affairs services and products. The imbizo took place at Ga-Molepo, Ga-Mothapo and surrounding areas.

The minister handed over smart ID’s to pensioners and 16-year-olds in commemoration of Mandela Day.
