Family of 9 living in 1-room shack receives house from radio station

POLOKWANE – Capricorn FM recently donated a newly-built and fully furnished house worth R1 million to a family of 10 in Ga-Mphahlele. The family shared a one-roomed shack.

Capricorn FM public relations and content coordinator, Peter Bopape said earlier this year, Pholoshong Home-based Care Centre, a non-governmental organisation working with vulnerable children in the Ga-Mphahlele area, brought the family’s plight to Capricorn FM’s attention.

“Upon visiting the family and seeing the living conditions of this family, Capricorn FM decided to get involved by building them a home.

The station then approached Vharanani Properties, who without hesitation agreed to get involved and form a partnership with Capricorn FM to give this family a home,” said Bopape.

The family is headed by an elderly woman who looks after her nine grandchildren, and they will soon move into a three-bedroom house complete with a lounge, kitchen, bathroom, toilet and a study for the children.

Vharanani CEO, David Mabilu said the decision to help the family came naturally to the company, which was already involved in many upliftment projects in different provinces.

“Vharanani is a caring company that makes it its business to uplift communities and make a difference in people’s lives. We are part and parcel of the communities in which we work. When we heard about the plight of this family, we did not think twice about doing our bit to help,” said Mabilu.

Capricorn FM managing director, Cyril Chetty said: “We were deeply moved when we visited this family and found them living in such adverse conditions. Being a radio station that cares, we were unable to turn a blind eye to this plea. Our hope is that this home will bring joy to this family. We will ensure we continue with more initiatives of this nature in 2014. Capricorn FM is a station that cares”.
