Cop’s firearm turns up in tavern

THE Mankweng magistrate’s court on Tuesday denied bail to two suspects who were arrested after they were allegedly found in possession of a stolen firearm over the weekend.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the police were executing their usual routine crime prevention raids when they found a firearm at a tavern in Mankweng.

The firearm was taken from an off-duty police official when he was stabbed and robbed in June.

“The police official was trying to locate his keys to open the gate of his Mankweng zone 1 home when two men approached and overpowered him.

“The men stabbed him several times before they searched his car and made off with his service pistol.

“The two suspects, Mahlatse Mapheto and Tshepo Bothabotha, will remain in police custody until their court appearance tomorrow (Thursday) when they will make a formal bid for bail,” Mulaudzi said.
