It all adds up at olympiad

Pepps Polokwane College learners took part in the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (Saipa) accounting olympiad last Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – Pepps Polokwane College learners took part in the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (Saipa) accounting olympiad last Wednesday.

Four gr. 12 learners took part in the olympiad and Review spoke to them about it.

Coretta Mtebule said although she loved accounting, the olympiad was really difficult. “I love accounting as I like to work with numbers, I like the challenge accounting offers me.”

She said the most difficult part about accounting was to get everything to balance, and the easiest thing was to work through transactions. Next year, she planned to study accounting.

Rhabela Mkhabela said she had always loved numbers, and liked accounting.

“The easiest part of accounting is to ensure everything balances. The hardest is to have enough time to do all the transactions and balancing before time runs out.”

She said although the Olympiad was challenging, she enjoyed it. After school, she wanted to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.

Caitlin Morris also took part in the olympiad. She said accounting was an easier subject for her than any language.

“The hardest part is to have enough time to complete a test. I am a perfectionist, so I cannot let it go if it does not balance.”

She said the easiest part was that there was just one right answer.

“The olympiad was challenging, but if you knew your gr. 10 work, then it was not that hard.”

Caitlin said she wanted to study medicine at Stellenbosch University or the University of Pretoria next year.

Johan de Lange was the only boy from Pepps to take part in the olympiad. He said he wanted to study accounting and become a chartered accountant.

“The easiest part of accounting is the general ledger and journals, although the salaries and wages journal is also simple. The hardest part is interpreting financial statements,” Johan said.
