LEARNERS at Nhlaniki Primary School in Nhlaniki village outside Giyani were the beneficiaries of a donation of reading books, a computer laboratory and other learning materials, which were recently donated by the educational trust, Rally to Read, in conjunction with Telkom and several other companies.

According to Elthiam Mavais who heads the Rally to Read project, the aim of the project was to provide schools in rural areas with basic study materials, which were necessary to help learners study with ease, and improve their reading skills.

“You are the future of this country, we must therefore teach you how to read by providing you with material that will make it easy for you to do so,” said Mavais.

She appealed to parents to help their children do their homework, as this was very important to improve their reading ability. “Helping them do their homework serves as a reminder of what they learned at school and this will help them grasp new lessons with ease.”

School principal, Philemon Hlungwani, said the donation would ensure the learners had a great opportunity to participate in the education system.

“The donation will not only boost teaching in the school, but will close the gap between schools in urban areas and those in rural areas in terms of levelling the field.”

“We also need this study material to ensure we lay a good platform for production of quality education of our learners.”
