Offenders exercise their voting rights

Offenders at the Polokwane correctional centre were given the opportunity to cast their votes at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voting station at the centre on Wednesday.

POLOKWANE – Offenders at the Polokwane correctional centre were given the opportunity to cast their votes at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voting station at the centre on Wednesday.

The general response from the 131 offenders who voted was that their votes would make a difference in South Africa, no matter what the outcome of the elections.

It was not just the offen-ders who made use of the voting station at the centre, 84 correctional service officials also used this station to cast their votes.

Correctional commissioner for Polokwane, Kenneth Mthombeni, said it was a positive experience for offenders to participate in the elections, because they were participating in changing the country and exercising their democratic rights.

“Their vote will determine the leaders of tomorrow, the ones who will determine the state of their incarceration,” Mthombeni said.
