‘Soetdorings turnoff an accident lying in wait’

Residents of the Soetdorings small holdings say the Soetdorings crossing, where the Soetdorings road and Landdros Maré Street (N1 North) cross, is a very dangerous crossing and "an accident waiting to happen".

POLOKWANE – Residents of the Soetdorings small holdings say the Soetdorings crossing, where the Soetdorings road and Landdros Maré Street (N1 North) cross, is a very dangerous crossing and “an accident waiting to happen”.

According to Mariaan Coetzee, member of the community policing forum, unclear sign boards and markings on the road confuse motorists and often lead to accidents.

Coetzee says they have given up asking the Polokwane Municipality and the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) to help them make this crossing safer. “We have contacted every person and institution possible to help us with this issue, but to no avail. We now have to turn to the media to draw attention to the matter,” Coetzee says.

She says residents have complained to Sanral, the municipality and the provincial traffic department and asked for the markings on the road surface to be repainted and for new road signs to be erected. She says these measures will make the crossing more visible and prevent many accidents.

Matshidiso Mothapo, municipal spokesperson, says the road markings at the crossing falls under the jurisdiction of Sanral. “The municipality will bring the matter to their attention at our next scheduled meeting. We always encourage residents to contact the municipality about any road related issues they might face.”

Mothapo says residents can report any road related problems to the municipality at (015) 290 2373 or (015) 290 2374.
