MEC hands over 1 422 title deeds to homeowners

The department of cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs MEC, Ishmael Kgetjepe granted 1 422 title deeds to people living near the city last Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – The department of cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs MEC, Ishmael Kgetjepe granted 1 422 title deeds to people living near the city last Tuesday.

The title deeds were handed over to people living in Polokwane Ext 44, 71, 73, 75, and 76, as well as Seshego A Ext 1 and Seshego 9L.

Kgetjepe said the department would continue delivering 905 title deeds in Polokwane Ext 76, and 315 title deeds in Polokwane Ext 40 in the coming financial year.

Kgetjepe said the Limpopo provincial government was in the process of resolving the challenges associated with the registration of a township for Polokwane Ext 40, and that a service provider had already been appointed to assist in resolving the matter.

According to Kgetjepe, government had registered and endorsed 15 843 properties for low-cost housing in the province.

“We must celebrate, as over 58 000 houses were built in Capricorn, over 34 000 houses were built in the Polokwane Municipality and over 4 000 houses were built in wards 8 and 13 since 1994.

“This is an asset that belongs to your family and which can be passed on to future generations. We urge you not to sell your houses or give them to loan sharks as some form of guarantee,” he said.

“We receive cases of sale and rental of these houses in most parts of the province. We appeal to the community to help fight this practise as it takes the work of government backwards and it sends the wrong message that government is not housing its people, as people go back to squatter camps after that,” he continued.

Selinah Moloto, one of the beneficiaries and the mother of three children said she was happy to have the title deed of her house as she spent so many years sleeping in a shack. Moloto said her children were now safe in the house provided by the Limpopo government.
