Limpopo teacher is the best of the best

THE Limpopo teacher was named the Pep 2013 Teacher of the Year.

THE Limpopo teacher was named the Pep 2013 Teacher of the Year.

Mologadi Priscilla Maluleke of Leubaneng Primary School in the Waterberg district won the Pep Teacher of the Year competition that was held last year.

She was presented with a R15 000 cash prize on Friday, while Trevor Chauke, the learner who nominated her, received a Pep store gift voucher worth R5 000.

Leubaneng Primary School won a Pep “library-in- a- box” containing 50 books.

In the competition, Pep and e.tv asked primary school learners to show their appreciation for their favourite teachers by entering these teachers in the Pep Teacher of the Year competition.

Speaking on behalf of Pep, Lana Martens of Weird Communications said the competition was part of the Pep’s flagship corporate social investment programme, Pep Academy.

She said the programme focused on primary school learners and aimed to offer these learners extra literacy and numeracy tuition.

She said Pep Academy provided after-school core competence training in literacy, numeracy and life skills to gr. 4 and 5 learners.

“We are aware that the biggest challenge faced by government and the education sector is to dramatically improve core performance and increase the average performance in South African schools, with problems often being attributed to poor transition from mother tongue to English at gr. 4 level.

“This is when many learners, who find it difficult to adapt to the transition leave school,” she said.

Martens said the Pep Academy’s curriculum was designed to support this critical change and help learners with homework, extra literacy and numeracy tuition as well as life skills training.

Maluleke said she would use the money to further her studies and improve her skills in the education sector.

“Teaching is my passion and I am happy to have put Limpopo on the map,” said Maluleke.
