Muni explains water tariffs and fines

POLOKWANE – The scarcity of water has been a long standing issue in the city and the municipality is now sending out invoices with large penalty amounts.

“We feel we need to bring clarity to the residents of Polokwane,” said Mashidisho Mothapo, assistant manager of communications at the municipality.

The allowed water limit per household is 20kl per month for dwellings and 14kl per month for flats or townhouses.

According to Section 83A of the Local Government Ordinance, No 17 of 1939, the council may prohibit or restrict the water under its control or management.

Fines are calculated in relation to the misuse of water for that specific domestic settlement. R10 will be levied for the first 10kl overspent and R40 per kl after that for dwellings. Flats and townhouses will be fined R10 per kl after the first five overspent, R20 for the next ten and R40 per kl after that.

“It is vital for the future that water is used correctly and sparingly,” Mothapo said.

Residents can contact the municipality at (015) 290 2000 for any water related queries and questions.
