[IN PICTURES] Lima Awards: local talent on stage

The Limpopo Music Awards (LIMA) went down with a bang, showing their appreciation for local talent.

POLOKWANE – Calvin CK Nkhumeleni and Jan DJ Janisto Maluleke scooped up the Song of the Year and the Best Duo Collaboration award. Benny Mayengani received a double award for the Best Male Artist and the Best Xitsonga Hit. Dr Thomas Chauke received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The glamourous event hosted by Skhumbuzo Mbatha and Lethaba Lejoy Mathatho took place at Meropa Casino on Saturday, 11 November.

According to Mahlasedi Media and Communication Managing Director, Fortune DJ Cappuccino Maswanganyi, the main idea or reason behind this, is to transform the image of the current music industry. “This is the first LIMA, and we are moving forward. LIMA is aimed at broadening the musical horizon on regional and provincial boarders. The most important thing is that the Limpopo Music Awards are sponsored by local business people,” he said.

The MEC of Sport, Arts, and Culture Onicca Moloi shared her delight in her department’s involvement in the awards.

“As a department when we support artists, we are not doing them a favour. The mandate of our department is to promote, support, and develop artists. This is the mandate we committed ourselves to live by. Limpopo is a province with cultural diversity that is why we are not running out of creativity,” Moloi added.

She also encourages artists to submit their details in order for these to be stored in the department database.

“We are not going to know you if you don’t come to us. When we have opportunities that are available that we as government create, we know who you are and where to find you and what you are doing. We are going to continue to make sure that we create opportunities,” she said.

MMP Security Director, Tau Malebana, maintains that these awards unify people. “It is truly encouraging to see so many young and new artists dominate the list. It can only be promising for the industry. The future is bright and we are happy for them,” Malebana concluded.
