LIMPOPO – AUGUST is women’s month, set to celebrate women and their importance in society.

Fifty-nine years ago, thousands of women marched to the Union Building to protest against the extension of pass laws to women. Not only does this month aim to pay tribute to the scores of women who took part in the march, but also to celebrate the successes made in bringing equality for women. The year 1956 was the start of a revolution which secured the rightful place of women in today’s society. Women are treated as equals today, the journey however, has not been easy.

Express asked residents what should be done for women to celebrate Women’s Month.

Talamo Mahlakano says she is excited about Women’s Month. “I feel that Women’s Month is important. We are being recognised as equals in this country. Women should be given credit, especially those who fought during the struggle and women in the entertainment industry. We are finally given the credit we deserve,” says Mahlakano.

“I think Limpopo should organise events during August to celebrate. It is not just the responsibility of the government, residents should step up as well,” says Mokwele.

“The women cannot be forgotten for what they did for us. We are now equal with men because of them. We are now able to go to schools of our own choice and enjoy gender equality,” says Katlego Nkoana.

“With the power of the women who fought for freedom, every woman can enjoy every minute of her life. “Women should no longer be undermined because they showed that they can lead the country in a good way,” said Katlego Ramatsakana.
