POLOKWANE – Table tennis players from New Horizon School celebrated Global ID Sports Day at Savannah Mall on June 12.

June 12 also marked 100 days to go until the 2015 Ecuador Global Games in Quito from September 19 to 27.

The aim of Global ID Sports Day is to promote sport for athletes with an intellectual disability.

The Inas Global Games is the world’s largest elite sporting event for athletes with intellectually disability.

The South Africa Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASAII) is one of the member countries that participates in Inas.

Each province in the country celebrated Global ID Sports Day at their schools, clubs, centres and communities.

Limpopo Province Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (LPSAII) motivated their affiliates to use this day to celebrate their athletes’ achievements.

In May, two Limpopo athletes, Thatuwani Mushiana and Rasejakate Pesa participated in the Inas World Half Marathon Championships in Portugal, where they returned with silver medals.

Mushiana ended fifth and Pesa seventh.

New Horizon is one of the LPSAII affiliates and the school celebrated some of their athlete’s achievements.

The first national athlete the school produced was Johan Korff, who took part in the World Swimming Championships in Argentina in 2001.

Phillip Chuene and Shannon Nkuna were part of the 2005 national cricket team that participated in the tri-nations cricket series against England and Australia.

Mahlodi Nkadimeng formed part of the team that represented the country in the International Table Tennis Championships for people with Down Syndrome in Portugal last year.

Nkadimeng and Salmita Mohale will represent South Africa during the World Table Tennis Championships for people with Down syndrome in Bloemfontein in November.

Koos Sello and Vikosi Rhikhotso will also fly the South African flag high during the World Athletics Championships for people with Down Syndrome that will also be held in Bloemfontein in November.
