Neglected park finally maintained

The municipality cleared the heap of sand that blocked the entrance of the Westenburg park and municipal workers were assigned to clean the park once a week.

POLOKWANE – The municipality cleared the heap of sand that blocked the entrance of the Westenburg park and municipal workers were assigned to clean the park once a week.

This after residents complained that the municipality neglected the park in their community because there is no grass or toilets and the road which leads to the park is full of potholes.

Tidimalo Chuene, a municipal spokesperson, said that a green lawn will require continuous watering after planting and before that can happen the municipality will first have to drill a borehole.

“Vandalism and theft is a big problem at the Westenburg park.

We urge the community to assist us in safeguarding the equipment at the park and the park itself as it is there for their recreational activities.

In the 2009/2010 financial year we did re-establishment and upgrading at the park, unfortunately each time we made renovations there was immediate vandalism.

“At some stage we repainted the playing equipment and the paint was scratched out while still wet,” Chuene said. She added that there was also a jungle gym, benches, braai-stands and swings which were stolen and the municipality had to replace them.

“Replacement items were also vandalised and stolen.

“Replacing and repairing these items is setting the municipality backwards financially while depriving the community of much needed recreational facilities,” Chuene said.

According to Chuene the municipality is committed to having Westenburg park fully operational, including functional toilets, as soon as money is available.

“The road towards the park will also be looked into.

“We plead with the community to please report any acts of vandalism and theft to our community safety at (015) 290 2000/2457/2458 or the nearest police station,” Chuene said.
