POLOKWANE – Pedestrians who regularly use the footpath through the veld in the vicinity of the corner of Oribi Avenue and Grobler Street say they are finding it increasingly difficult to use the the pathway due to refuse being illegally dumped there.
“We have been using this path for years, but it is becoming more and more of a challenge with people dumping rubbish on the gravel road,” John Makgabelo, said.
Review went to investigate and found that building rubble and household refuse had been dumped all over the unused erf.
Municipal spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene, said the municipality had taken note of the illegal dumping and would look into the matter.
“Illegal dumping is becoming more and more of a problem and we are receiving a lot of complaints on the matter,” Chuene said.
She said the municipality relied on these reports and residents could contact the municipality in this connection at (015) 290 2366.
She said perpetrators would be fined an amount of R1 000 and given a notice to remove the rubbish, and if they failed to do so they could be taken to court where more fines could be issued. “The municipality has made a landfill site available to the public for the dumping of rubble and the public is urged to make use of the facility provided by the municipality,” she said.
