DA calls for the protection of statues in Lim

LIMPOPO – DA PROVINCIAL leader, Jacques Smalle, has written to cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs MEC, Makoma Makhurupetje, requesting a comprehensive list of all statues, buildings and other sites that are protected by the National Heritage Act in Limpopo’s 25 municipalities.

This followed Monday’s defacing of a sculpture in Polokwane, and the subsequent removal of this and other busts of historical importance by the Moolman Groep for safekeeping.

“The DA will encourage Makhurupetje to develop a plan of action for preservation of our statues and to engage in open dialogue to safeguard our diverse heritage.

“The DA calls for an inclusive politics where everyone’s ancestry and heritage is commemorated. We cannot celebrate the Constitution when it protects our right to freedom of expression and belief but want to disregard it when it protects other people’s right to the same thing,” Smalle said.

“As a country we will not know where we are going if we do not know where we came from.

“While other parties are busy inciting hate, intolerance and the superiority of one culture or history over another, which are the very things that caused Apartheid and xenophobia, the DA will continue to roll up its sleeves in working for an open opportunity society for all,”Smalle further said.
