No need to panic over traffic fines

Motorists are assured that they will not be in trouble if they receive traffic fines through the post after the due date the fines should have been paid, as this will have been due to the recent South African Post Office employee strike.

POLOKWANE – Motorists are assured that they will not be in trouble if they receive traffic fines through the post after the due date the fines should have been paid, as this will have been due to the recent South African Post Office employee strike.

Motorists will only suffer the consequences if they do not pay the traffic fines once they have been received.

Municipal spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said when a motorist disregarded the traffic law and was stopped by a traffic officer, the officer issued a fine directly to the offender.

The fine clearly explained the details of the offence committed and the date. The fine also included when and where it should be paid, he said.

Mothapo further said speeding fines captured on the digital speed cameras in the city were the only fines that were posted to offenders.

“The notice of offence received through the post does not have a court date, but just a notice that the motorist has committed an offence and should pay. If over a period, the fine is not paid, the offender will be personally issued a direct summons at home or his or her place of employment with a court date.

“Therefore, the post office labour actions should not have a negative impact on the payment of fines issued,” Mothapo explained.
