Polokwane hosts Lipa on first-line HIV treatment
Lipa and Dr. Mathe presents latest HIV treatment guidelines, highlighting benefits of rilpivirine in first-line therapy.
POLOKWANE – Earlier this month, the Limpopo Independent Practitioners Association (Lipa), in collaboration with global healthcare company Viatris, hosted an informative event where Dr Moeketsi Mathe presented the latest guidelines for navigating first-line HIV treatment.
Held in the private meeting room of Fusion Boutique Hotel, the event was attended by doctors from various medical fields. Dr Nkhensani Khosa, Lipa deputy chairperson, served as the evening’s programme director, warmly welcoming guests.
Mathe, a renowned South African HIV clinician and an authority on antiretroviral therapy (ART), has made significant contributions to clinical guidelines and is the founder of the African Viral Care Society (AVCS). With extensive experience in private practice, Mathe is also a key opinion leader advising pharmaceutical companies and educating healthcare professionals.
Additionally, he lectures part-time at Wits University, advocating for healthcare accessibility as a basic human right in South Africa.
During his presentation, Mathe emphasised the importance of rilpivirine, a second-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).
This drug is included in the first-line antiretroviral therapy guidelines in many high-income countries, such as the United States and several in Europe.
He highlighted that rilpivirine is available in a single-tablet fixed-dose combination, has a favourable tolerability profile, and is relatively cost-effective.
Mathe also discussed the challenges and opportunities of introducing rilpivirine into first-line HIV treatment options in South Africa.
The presentation concluded with a panel discussion, where attending doctors participated in a question-and-answer session and explored potential solutions.
