Reach for Recovery opens in Polokwane

Reach for Recovery is an international, volunteer-based non-profit organisation that offers breast cancer patient support services.

POLOKWNE – Each year, over 2.3 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer, making it the most common cancer among adults.

The Reach for Recovery Breast Cancer Support Organisation has launched a new branch in Polokwane, dedicated to raising awareness and supporting those living with breast cancer.

Reach for Recovery is an international, volunteer-based non-profit organisation that offers patient support services.

Built on the principle of peer support, the organisation connects women who have experienced breast cancer with those newly diagnosed.

Volunteers, who are breast cancer survivors themselves, provide emotional and practical support, helping patients navigate their journey from diagnosis through recovery.

Mokgaetji Hlaka, a volunteer with Reach for Recovery, explains that the organisation operates through localised fundraising and long-term sponsorships.

“Each branch, including our new Polokwane branch, sustains itself through community fundraising efforts. Our mission is to offer emotional, practical, and physical support to individuals with breast cancer, enhance early detection, and improve the quality of life for those affected,” Hlaka said.

To mark the launch of the Polokwane branch and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an awareness event will be held on October 19

. This event aims to inform the community about the organisation’s work and raise awareness about breast cancer.

Mercia Warmenhoven, another volunteer, highlighted the group’s focus on both women and men affected by breast cancer.

“Our goal is to ensure that no one faces breast cancer alone. We provide support through emotional care, practical assistance, and early detection promotion. We also educate young women about the importance of regular check-ups and encourage men to be aware of their risk,” Warmenhoven noted.

The organisation also offers post-surgery support, including prosthetics, and collaborates with healthcare professionals to extend its services.

It plays a crucial role in advocating for breast cancer awareness and combatting the stigma associated with the disease.
