Man (66) arrested at Kranskop with protected species

A white combi was stopped at the Kranskop Toll gate transporting 112 cycads without a permit.

LIMPOPO – A 66-year-old man was arrested for transporting specimens of a listed threatened or protected species without a permit at the Kranskop Toll Plaza on Monday morning (September 2).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police were alerted about a white combi with a trailer, both with Gauteng registration number plates transporting illegal cycads on the N1 North.

“The Kombi was stopped at the Kranskop Tollgate where the police discovered cycads in the trailer without a permit. A total of 112 cycads (19 species) were discovered,” his statement read.

Ledwaba added that an undisclosed amount of money, including foreign currency, was found in the vehicle.

“The suspect was arrested and detained at the Modimolle Police Station and appeared before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court today on charges of transporting specimens of a listed, threatened, or protected species without permit. Police investigations continue,” he said.
