Fire safety workshop ignites excitement at MH
Fireman Rukka's interactive workshop at Mitchell House taught learners essential safety skills, from home safety to escape techniques.
POLOKWANE – Rouan Snyman, affectionately known as ‘Fireman Rukka,’ energised Mitchell House learners on Friday with an interactive fire safety workshop.
The session covered essential topics, including fire and safety practices at home, the proper use of fire extinguishers, and vehicle and road safety.
The excitement was palpable as learners eagerly shouted, “Choose me, Fireman Rukka!” during the demonstrations on fire service equipment.
Snyman spoke of the importance of engaging children with fun, relatable methods.
“When teaching kids, you need to meet them at their level and make learning enjoyable. That’s why schools prefer these interactive visits over formal presentations at fire stations, where things might seem too serious for young learners,” he explained.
Snyman’s visit offered a unique perspective on fire safety, focusing on what children should avoid, such as playing with candles, heaters, and stoves.
He also demonstrated crucial techniques for escaping smoke-filled areas, including crawling to avoid inhalation and the Stop, Drop, and Roll method for dealing with clothing fires.
Using a stove, pot, and matchstick, he illustrated the principle of ‘no oxygen, no fire’, reinforcing how vital it is to understand fire safety.
Learners left the session with valuable knowledge and a newfound respect for fire safety, thanks to Fireman Rukka’s engaging and informative approach.
