Bullying incident at a Limpopo high school sparks outrage

Outrage erupts at Sinungani High School after a video surfaces showing a bullying incident, prompting parents to demand action from school officials.

LIMPOPO – Parents of learners at Sinungani High School are calling for urgent action after a video of a violent bullying incident surfaced on social media.

In the video, a Gr 9 learner is seen assaulting two classmates, accusing them of taking his girlfriend.

The incident, which occurred on August 15, highlights the growing problem of bullying in schools.

Many parents are outraged, expressing their frustration with the school’s handling of the situation.

They claim that the school’s management has not done enough to address issues of bullying and gangsterism.

Some parents have threatened to remove their children from the school if proper measures aren’t taken.

One concerned parent, who asked to remain anonymous, shared his disappointment with the school’s response.

“After the incident, my son and the other child were called to the office and told to shake hands and forgive each other. I am angry and fearful for my child’s safety,” he said.

He added that his son has been facing continuous bullying, which has caused him serious mental distress.

During a meeting between school officials and parents, opinions were divided. While some parents called for the expulsion of the learner responsible for the attack, others believed that a different course of action should be taken. However, all agreed that the issue of bullying must be addressed more seriously by the authorities.

Community member Lucky Malema said early intervention in curbing violent behaviour among learners is important.

“If we don’t motivate these learners early, they’ll find violence and bullying entertaining. We urge learners to report any incidents that threaten the safety of others, so we can maintain a peaceful learning environment.”

He also announced plans to raise awareness about the dangers of bullying, gangsterism, and negative attitudes towards school subjects, including a community-led initiative to camp outside schools until significant change is observed.

Mosebjane Kgafe, spokesperson for the Department of Basic Education, stressed the need for society to work together to combat bullying.

“Children who feel bullied should report it so they can get the help they need,” she said.

She assured parents that the department will investigate the incident and remains committed to addressing bullying across all schools.
