Limpopo golf team excels in national tournament

A team of four golfers excelled in the SA Women's Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Golf Tournament, winning the silver division for golfers over 35.

POLOKWANE – A foursome golf amateurs from Limpopo excelled during the South African Women’s Mid-Amateur Inter-Provincial Golf Tournament that took place at Irene Country Club in Gauteng two weeks ago.

Dezi Earle, Luzaan Combrink, Luani van Rooyen and Henriëtte Liebenberg were the winners in the silver division for golfers over 35 years and there were no handicaps applicable in the competition.

Golfers from Limpopo, the Eastern Province, Free State, Border, North West, Ekurhuleni and Mpumalanga showed their skills during the four-day event, kicking off with a one-day practice round.

According to Earle, the course was dry and golfers could therefore obtain good distances. She putted for an eagle twice.

“We played fourballs in the morning and singles in the afternoons and won 23 games, giving us 10 points,” she explained.

According to Earle, the team did not have a manager. “By this time, we know how and when.”

She added that golf is the best sport in the world and a sport for all ages.

“Every day is different and somedays nothing goes wrong, but the next day there are many challenges.

Earle extended her sincere appreciation to Golf RSA for organising the event and for Golf Limpopo who sponsored the team’s expenses.

“Next year we will compete in the A-division and we are looking forward to meet golfers from Gauteng, the Western Province, Kwa-Zulu Natal and others,” she said.

Earle is the Pro Shop manager at the Polokwane Golf Club, administrator of the green fees and responsible for the weekly publication of results.

“I have been with the club now for more than seven years and it has become a lifestyle for me. It is my passion and I wake up every morning, looking forward to a day of fun around the energy at the golf club,” she said.

She reminded golf lovers of the Baobab Classic at Polokwane Golf Club that is scheduled for this week, concluding with a FREE concert by the Martin Bester Band on Friday (tomorrow) evening, starting around 18:00, with the prize-giving.

“Entry is free of charge, so come in your numbers and leave your coolbags at home and support our cash bar,” Earle said.
